6th Grade Mathematics
The Foundation of 6th grade curriculum will begin your preparation for 7th, 8th and high school math. This is the ground level basic understanding building the next 3 to 5 years of your education. It is necessary to ensure your mastery of the content, and demonstrate your ability to real world problems and future grade level applications over the next three to five years. Whole concept instruction will be taught and built upon incorporating 5th grade concepts. It will require abstract thought, group math talk and "No Fear" trial and error practice. Homework is key in 6th grade along with daily participation, individual daily work, centers, which give you a chance to demonstrate individual work with the teacher, and mastery of the content. We will also work on the organization of binders with focus on folders for homework, your daily planner, timely completion and turning in of assignments. Communication with students, parents and teachers is ideal with the team approach toward success of our students. We have built into the schedule a period for additional help and time with all subject areas, which is the advisory.
In the event that students are struggling with two or more subjects, we have an after-school tutorial program, "ECATS", which meets from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm with bus transportation available. This program gives students the opportunity to work with teachers and catch up on missing assignments. This is an ongoing program in which students will be required to stay for 3 weeks until dismissed, contingent on all subject areas, work is caught up and new habits are learned. If the student is released and falls behind again after one to two weeks, then the student will be placed in the program for the duration of the quarter. There are some instances where it is to the benefit of the student to be in after-school tutorials until the end of the semester. This is not a disciplinary program, this is a tool to help in prioritizing school work and completing assignments that result in passing daily grades, understanding content in the classroom, passing tests, diminishing negative behavior in the classroom and, over all, confidence in success in classes.
We are very determined and dedicated teachers who ensure that all students get a chance to learn. Therefore, disruption of the classroom will lead to immediate phone calls home and quickly lead to infractions which require Asst. Principals and Principals to get involved with parents.
